“Making Senses” Play Addresses Issues of Gender and Disability on a Local and International Tour PDF Print E-mail

With the support of BASR and 20 other international and local organizations, Al Hara Theatre, in partnership with Ogonblicksteatern Theatre - Sweden, presented an intercultural play titled “Making Senses”, and opened its premiere at Dar al-Nadwa International Centre in the old city of Bethlehem. The play which was performed by six Palestinian and Swedish actors of both genders, addressed issues of gender and disability in both cultural contexts. One of the Palestinian actresses works at BASR.

The play, presented in three languages (Swedish, English and Arabic), displayed funny, sad and deviating stories of six women with disabilities in Sweden and Palestine living under drastically different conditions: the one whose life suddenly got color when she lost her vision; the one whose husband came home on her birthday and told her he had someone else in his life; the one who was never supposed to leave the house; the one who thinks the funniest thing in the world is when people trip over and hurt themselves.

The play was based on interviews with women with different disabilities, cultural backgrounds, ages and identities from Palestine and Sweden, aiming to show different hurdles facing people with disabilities, on a local tour in Palestine and on an international one that will take place in Sweden early next year.
