Summer Camp for Empowering Children with Disability and their Mothers in Deheisheh PDF Print E-mail

BASR’s outreach team took part in a 4-day summer camp at the Regional Committee for Rehabilitation center in Deheisheh, organized by UNRWA, in participation of 40 mothers and their children with such disabilities as cerebral palsy, psychomotor retardation and Down syndrome, came from several refugee camps including Arroub and Fawwar camps in Hebron district and Deheisheh camp in Bethelehem district.

The summer camp tackled such topics as mental health and special education, as well as leisure and artifact activities, to promote inclusion of children with disability in participation with their families. In meantime, BASR’s outreach team consisting of occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech therapist, optical specialist, audiology therapist and social worker, rendered psychosocial support to the mothers, “all the mothers including me realized that we have to form working groups and take intensive trainings on disability issues in future”, one mother commented pleasantly.

The outreach team evaluated the children with speech and swallowing disorders disabilities, with hearing, vision and motor impairments. Some of them need technical aids, while others are referred to BASR for further assessment.

The camp aims at empowering the mothers by developing their skills on how to cope with their child disabilities at home. “The camp lifted our spirits. I feel much more aware now” a mother said in relief.
