Two Workshops on “Social Responsibility” for Disability Issues organized by BASR’s CBR Program PDF Print E-mail

BASR’s CBR team organized two workshops in Bethlehem and Hebron about “Social Responsibility” for Disability Issues, both supported byCBM, each targeting 20 members and staff of local authorities. The workshops tackled such topics as the concept of social responsibility, the concept of disability and models of disability as well as attitudinal, environmental and institutional barriers that hinder the full participation of persons with disabilities in society. It was emphasized during the workshops that it is the state responsibility to fulfill its obligations towards persons with disabilities on equal footing with other citizens and that, now-a-days, modernization / civilization is measured by the level of attention and concern states demonstrate towards their citizens including those with disabilities. At the end of both workshops, the participants worked on designing action plans for removing certain barriers that hinder the inclusion of persons with disabilities and deprive them of access to basic services in their communities, in order to help bridge the existing gab between persons with and without disabilities. Such workshops aim at raising the awareness of local authority representatives and sensitizing them regarding their social responsibility towards disability and persons with disabilities. They also aim at contributing towards a paradigm shift in dealing with disability issues in the Palestinian society.
