Ghirass Cultural Center – Outreach Program and Reading Campaign Reaches New Villages Around Bethlehem PDF Print E-mail

Ghirass Cultural Center started a reading campaign in October 2010 in four villages - Al-Khader, Battir, Zakaria, Al-Khas and Al-Nu’man - in the surroundings of Bethlehem. This year the program was successfully extended to five other locations: Beit Fajar, Thabra, Tkoa, Wadinis and Rhassilwad.

The reading campaign includes cooperation with nine schools and seven kindergartens in these villages. This campaign aims at raising awareness about the importance of reading to create and foster a reading culture as a daily activity in Palestinian families. The Ghirass staff regularly visits the targeted kindergartens and schools to follow up the program, offer workshops for parents and organize reading related activities for children.

At the beginning of the program, Ghirass Center provided each location with a mobile library that teachers can use and move from one classroom to another.

The kindergartens and schools are enthusiastic about the results of this campaign and are eager to extend this program as the children are already showing significant improvements in their academic achievements.
